Triple C Rail Trail

ABOUT US >>

In the 1980s Norfolk Southern, the then owner of this section of track began abandonment. Abandoning the section between Kings Creek and York (a total of 18.3 miles) in the mid 80s; and the section between York and Tirzah (a distance of 4.7 miles) in the late 1980s. The most recent section to be abandoned was approximately one mile in Kings Creek, it was abandoned around 2007, to accommodate the Highway 5 widening.

In 1994, the James Ross Wildlife Reservation opened. It was donated to the Department of Natural Resources by (Miss) Ms. Kitty W. Sandifer, who was born on the property and lived most of her life in nearby York, SC. She was a school teacher prior to her retirement and lived to be 96 years of age before her death in February 1994. This piece of property provided access to the first 1.2 miles of trail available for public use.

In the late 1990s, approximately one mile of former right of way was opened as the York Bicycle Trail. This section was paved with an asphalt surface, and an additional half mile was cleared through to Roberts Avenue, with the gravel surface remaining. Further sections have remained open since abandonment, such as the section near Kings Creek, others have been cleared (to provide as much of a continuous trail as possible) by volunteers, hikers and other trail users. However, work is continuously ongoing to improve the trail.
